Whales are a widely distributed and diverse group of aquatic placental marine mammals. They are extremely adaptable to life underwater that they are not particularly able to survive on land. They are the creatures of the open ocean; they feed, mate, give birth, suckle and raise their young at sea. They are more or less like us humans except, we cannot particularly breathe underwater similarly to the way they do.

There are currently eight extant whale families: The Rorquals, Right whales, the pygmy right whale, the grey whale, the belugas and narwhals, the sperm whale, the dwarf sperm whale and the beaked whales.

During the 10th century period, hunting of whales became a big activity within different parts of the world. Unfortunately, what then suffered the most was the ratio of existing whales in the world. Slowly but surely, the number of whales decreased drastically over the years and some, almost and/or completely became extinct; and this unfortunate activity was then known as whaling.

One family of whales that suffered the most during that “whaling” debacle was the Right Whale, scientifically known as Balaenidae. They are slow, fat; playful and they generally like to approach the shore so closely that they are sometimes within reach of a harpoon hurled from the beach. They mate in a similar way that we do and the males treat mating with the females as promiscuously as the male species of the human race do. They can generally mate with two different females within a short period.  Females can however, avoid mating simply by rolling upside down at the surface, turning away from their male companion. They care for their calves similarly to the way our mothers do with us. These mammals are we and we are they.

As the human species, it is completely sad how we have spent about six centuries hunting down these creatures to the point of no return. Our hunting habits had no base at all, and they still do not have any base.

Why did we even start whale hunting? I sometimes find myself asking.

Was it plainly for research purposes? Is it that we humans just never know when to stop and how to stop? Either way, I do not think any reason was good reason enough to perform this outrageous activity towards these defenceless creatures of the sea.

I guess the success story would be that over the years, whaling has become an illegal activity in most parts of the world. We are now seeing a vast number of these creatures migrating from one ocean to the other.

If one would like to personally have an experience with magnificent creatures without intending any harm towards them, one can go and visit the Atlantic coast of north to witness them.

Recently, it has been reported that whaling will and/or has already ensued in other parts of the world. To continuously save these creatures, let us stand and speak out against this illegal activity that only seems to damage and take away from our planet.
